Literacy

Our pupils develop a love of books and reading from their first day at school - from weekly visits to the library, where our librarian inspires reading and organises authors to visit the school, to daily stories with the teachers. We encourage a home/school partnership where families are encouraged to read daily with their children whilst providing a language rich environment.

The daily teaching of phonics is delivered in a systematic, multi-sensory way. Children are inspired to develop their blending and segmenting skills through songs and games. Our fun and fast-paced approach allows for excellent progress in the development of reading and writing skills.

Children develop a positive attitude to writing through an acknowledgement of their mark making as a form of communication. We provide children with the opportunity to mark make in many different and exciting forms such as labels, shopping lists, menus, cards and book making. Adults offer support with emergent writing through guidance with pencil grip, letter formation and the application of phonics.

'Phonics is fun because we do lots of games and I found out about digraphs and trigraphs.' - Reception pupil
