Early Years

The Early Years applies to children from birth to the end of the Reception year. At Thomas’s, children join our Reception classes at the beginning of the school year in which they are five.

Our aim is to create a happy, inviting and exciting environment in which our children flourish and learn. The Early Years is a fundamental part of every child’s development and we believe that instilling positive dispositions towards learning at the beginning of their educational journey, will set children up with the skills they need to continue through life at school.

Our ethos is based on learning through play; allowing the children to question, be resilient, make links and reflect on everything that they do. We facilitate lessons in a way that allows children to have autonomy over their learning, whilst guiding, stretching and supporting them at the same time. The children have the opportunity to make choices, be creative and solve problems, form good relationships with their peers and teachers and develop their own personalities. To support the learning that takes place indoors, three afternoons a week are spent outdoors. These are carefully planned sessions with stimulating and purposeful activities.

See below for the seven areas of learning and development that comprise the Early Years.
