Maths

We want every child to become comfortable and confident when learning mathematics and when using and applying their skills. Children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning with support, guidance, modelling, reinforcement, enjoyment and extension being constant in every lesson. The curriculum provides pupils with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in number, shape, space and measure and statistics. It develops the numeracy capabilities that everyone needs in personal, work and everyday life. Every opportunity is taken to show children the cross-curricular links with other subjects to give their learning more purpose. Regular whole school maths projects celebrate these.

A high quality maths education provides a foundation for understanding the world around us, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of excitement and curiosity about the subject. As pupils learn maths, they need to acquire fluency in procedures and develop a conceptual understanding, if they are to be able to solve increasingly complex problems. Children are given the opportunity to ask questions, explore and challenge concepts. The curriculum aims to ensure that children become confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics.

'Maths is brilliant. My teacher always finds a way to keep us interested. At Thomas's Fulham, support will be given at any slight sign of struggling.' - Year 6 pupil
