French

All pupils are taught French from Reception through to Year 6. Reception pupils are introduced to the conventions of the French language through a host of songs that they are delighted to perform. In Years 1 and 2 pupils play games, sing songs, practise role-play and write simple phrases, all with the aim of fostering a love of the language.

In Prep School children continue to strengthen their speaking and listening but we also focus on developing more complex structures when reading and writing in French. In Years 5 and 6 we use a range of resources to help build upon and consolidate their increasing vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Pupils are able to use technology to enhance their exposure to the language, for example, to assess and reflect on their spoken language skills.

Every year we plan some exciting events. For example: European Languages Week, French Day or inviting in a French theatre company.

“In French, the use of homework supports pupils’ learning of vocabulary and ensures that most-able pupils and those whose first language is French make the very strong progress of which they are capable.” Ofsted 2018
