Years 3, 4 & 5 make up the Middle School. We continue with three classes in each cohort, with a full-time teaching assistant in Year 3 and two support teachers to assist the teaching of the core subjects across the Middle School. From Year 3, children are set by ability for Maths.
The focus in the Middle School is on learning. Learning happens best when children are happy and engaged, with appropriate challenge and support. Our aim is to ensure that children leave the Middle School not only ready for the Senior School selection process, but also confident and motivated to learn independently.
We are proud of the balance we have created between our commitment to the broad curriculum alongside the rigour required for the 11+ and 13+ pre-test preparation.
Children in Year 3 and 4 are introduced to the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This is a thematic, creative and collaborative curriculum, allowing us to deliver the National Curriculum in an inspiring way, with an international flavour and a focus on our School Values.
The Thomas’s Outdoor Education Programme continues into the Middle School. Year 3 pupils enjoy an off-site Woodland Adventure every half term. Year 4 pupils become Young Explorers, embarking on an afternoon of critical thinking and adventure every 3 weeks. In Year 5 the children head to Daheim in the Austrian Alps for five days of skiing and outdoor experiences.
Assessment throughout each academic year - both formal and informal - helps us to determine a child’s understanding and progress. Weekly Pupil Progress Meetings allow us to reflect on the support and challenge in place and we are proud of our commitment to communication; parents are involved in their child’s academic journey every step of the way.
