Battersea Square

Thomas's Battersea Square
Initial Information

Thomas’s Battersea Square is a coeducational school for students aged 11 to 18. It offers a world-class, progressive education which is forward-thinking and outward-looking, with values at its heart. Our aim is to prepare students superbly not only for the next phase of their education, but also for their lives that lie beyond. Restlessly innovative, we strive to equip our students with the knowledge, the skills, the character and the self-understanding which will empower them not merely to survive, but to flourish and to thrive as the adults of tomorrow.

We recognise the need to serve the current national educational system, with its disproportionate emphasis on outcomes. However, we firmly believe that outstanding examination results can be - must be - the by-product of a first-class, broad education, which meets the needs of the whole child - mind, body and soul. Education is about so much more than exam results.

Above all, as our students in these formative years develop a growing sense of self, we seek to nurture in them a strong set of values, with kindness at the core, which will encourage them to take up positions of responsibility and leadership, to give back to their communities and to make a positive contribution to the world.

The Head of Thomas’s Battersea Square is Ben Thomas.  Ben, 51, is a Principal of Thomas’s London Day Schools, holds a Master’s degree in Education from the UCL Institute of Education and has twenty-two years’ experience as a junior school Headmaster.   For the last eight years he has also served on the board of St Paul’s School, where he was a member of the Education Committee, Chair of the Safeguarding Committee and Deputy Chairman of Governors. He is married to Katie and they have a son and two daughters, aged 22, 20 and 18.

Headmaster of Thomas’s Clapham, Phil Ward becomes Thomas’s Director of Education in September 2021, leading and embedding our new curriculum across all Thomas's schools. Prior to Thomas’s Clapham, Phil was Headmaster of Feltonfleet School and a housemaster at Uppingham School.

Therese Andrews is Director of Curriculum Innovation. Therese gained her Master’s degree at Harvard Graduate School, was Head of Middle School at the British International School in Boston and Deputy Head of Secondary at the Nord Anglia International School of Shanghai. She joins Thomas’s Battersea Square from Fieldwork Education, where she was Head of International Curriculum.

Returning to Thomas’s is Angela McDonald, formerly Chief of Staff at Thomas’s Battersea, who has an MA from the University of Cambridge and has taken up the post of Director of Admissions & Administration at Thomas’s Battersea Square.

Thomas’s Battersea Square is located on two campuses. The Battersea Square site, housed in the former home of the Royal Academy of Dance, is our central campus and is due to come on stream in September 2022. This historic building offers 40,000 sq ft of educational space, immediately adjacent to Thomas’s Battersea. Subject to the necessary consents, it will undergo a substantial refurbishment which will provide 28 classrooms, including science laboratories, break-out spaces, a study centre, assembly and performance hall, cafeteria and school dining hall.

A second site at Putney Vale provides additional facilities, as well as access to the Richardson Evans playing fields and Wimbledon Common, both of which are immediately adjacent.

Year 7 and Year 9 entry confirmed from September 2021

We will accept students into both Year 7 and Year 9 for the first time in September 2021. The school will be based entirely at the Putney Vale site for its inaugural academic year 2021 - 2022. Our intention is that Years 7 to 13 will then be based at Thomas’s Battersea Square from September 2022, with additional facilities in Putney Vale.
