Battersea Square

Thomas's Battersea Square
Initial Information
Full details will be published in June 2020

Vision
Opening in September 2021, Thomas’s Battersea Square is a new, coeducational school for students aged 13 to 18 which offers a world-class, progressive education that is forward-thinking and outward-looking, with values at its heart. Our aim is to prepare students superbly not only for the next phase of their education, but for the lives that lie beyond. Restlessly innovative, we strive to equip our pupils of today with the knowledge, the skills, the character and the self-understanding which will empower them not merely to survive, but to flourish and to thrive as the adults of tomorrow.

At the heart of our curriculum is the concept of an ‘enquiry mindset’, designed to develop our pupils’ powers of creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. We embrace with optimism the opportunities afforded by technology and seek to harness its power to do good. In parallel, we encourage our pupils to develop mind, body and soul, to become ‘fully human’, to have regard for their wellbeing and for that of others, to remain connected to and in tune with the natural world.

We recognise the need to serve the current national educational system, with its disproportionate emphasis on outcomes, but we firmly believe that outstanding examination results can be - must be - the by-product of a first-class, broad education, which meets the needs of the whole child - mind, body and soul - and never its sole aim. Education is about so much more than exam results.

Above all, as our pupils in these formative years develop a growing sense of self, we seek to nurture in them a strong set of values, with kindness at the core, which will encourage them to take up positions of responsibility and leadership, to give back to their communities and to make a positive contribution to the world.

Thomas’s Battersea Square
We are excited to announce that we have recently agreed terms with Avanton Ltd. to acquire the home of the Royal Academy of Dance in Battersea Square. This historic building is immediately adjacent to Thomas’s Battersea and offers more than 40,000 square feet of educational space. Subject to obtaining the necessary consents, the agreement we have negotiated will lead to a substantial refurbishment of the current site, with occupancy in the summer of 2022. To be known as “Thomas’s Battersea Square”, this building will provide the academic centre for Years 9 to 13 (pupils aged 13 to 18) in 28 classrooms, including science laboratories, break-out spaces, a study centre, assembly and performance hall, cafeteria and school dining hall.

A second campus in Putney Vale (currently the site of Hall School Wimbledon Junior School) will provide additional facilities for the senior years, as well as access to the Richardson Evans Sports Fields and to Wimbledon Common, both of which are adjacent.

Appointments announced
As announced recently, when he completes his tenure as Headmaster of Thomas’s Clapham, Phil Ward will become Thomas’s Director of Education in September 2021, leading and embedding our revised curriculum across all of the Thomas's schools.

The Head of Thomas’s Battersea Square will be Ben Thomas. A Principal of Thomas’s, Ben, 51, has 22 years’ experience as a junior school headmaster. For the last eight years he has also served on the board of St Paul’s School, where he sits on the Education Committee, chairs the Safeguarding Committee and is Deputy Chair of Governors. Ben is married to Katie and they have a son and two daughters, aged 21, 20 and 18.

Returning to Thomas’s is Angela McDonald, formerly Chief of Staff of Thomas’s Battersea, who has taken up the post of Director of Admissions and Administration of Thomas’s Battersea Square.

Year 9 entry confirmed from September 2021
We are now ready to confirm that we will accept students into Year 9 for the first time in September 2021. The very first cohort of Year 9 students will, for their first year, start and end the day at Thomas’s Battersea, from where they will be transported to the Putney Vale campus for their lessons. Our intention is that the senior years will be based at Thomas’s Battersea Square from September 2022, with additional facilities in Putney Vale.
